My team had a "guest star" riding for us that day...Greensboro native and professional cyclist Andy Crater. And I rode myself into the ground at his request, probably my finest domestique day ever. Alas, Andy came up a bit short--just getting pipped at the line by Jittery Joes speedster Jeff Hopkins.

And, yes, the wee man to my right in the Stars and Stripes is Scotty Weiss sporting his Elite national road champion jersey.

And, yes, my sideburns have never been longer.

The compact Giant was truly a scary bike to ride. I rode a Small, and it wasn't much bigger than the BMX frames I rode as a youngster. The uber-short wheelbase is not user friendly when you're bombing down a mountainside at 50+ mph. And there's no such thing as daydreaming on auto-pilot with the hair-trigger, freaky twitchy front end. But man oh man, could that bike rocket up a climb. Good luck coming down the other side...
