Aussies have been popping up in the TDF for a long time: Sir Hubert in the 20s, John Beasley in the 50s, Donald Allan in the 70s, etc. French Wikipedia, by the way, is a great resource here -- they're got a complete team roster for every single edition since the 30s.

It's nice to see "Mocka" getting some good press in this century. He was extraordinary in many ways. I would like to add a few things to Bobke's thumbnail:
1. in 1949, Mockridge won Australian (amateur) national titles at 5 miles, 4 miles, 1 mile, kilo and match sprint.
2. he won his first ever race start, in Geelong, never having been on so much as a training ride with a racing cyclist.
3. in 1947 he won the national road title in a 125-miler.
4. by the end of 1951, Mockridge had contested 10 national titles and won them all.

Mockridge was truly gifted, a "natural." He deserves to be remembered and honored in this 50-year anniversary of his tragic death. Thanks, Bobke, for getting his name in front of your audience.

K-Ro:
Thanks!

GWR:
The book is DEFINITELY hard to find. I found out about it, I think, through reading Allan Peiper's book...he mentioned it and maybe talked about how inspirational he was to Peiper heading to Belgium. Anyway, I exercised my powers as a librarian and found the solitary copy held in an American library (at Rider University in New Jersey). My local library was able to inter-library loan the copy to me and I plowed my way through it.

Good write-up! It sounded like another excellent title to add to my collection, except that the going rate on Abe is, er, rather pricey. And not even my local library, generally reliable, has it. A nice find, indeed.
