At the Fat Tire Fest in Cable, Wi., this weekend, both Greg LeMond and Gary Fisher showed up and ran the Cheq 40. Both didn't act the celeb part, but stuck around and talked to alot of people. LeMond has always been approachable, not like Lance.

When the Tour DuPont rolled through my neck of the woods in 1996, I guessed right that such an assemblage of domestic/Euro talent would likely not make it\'s way through the area for some time (if ever) so I was out before and after the 3 stages close to my home.

The day before I cornered Lance, my wife and I bumped into Tony Rominger in downtown Raleigh after the time trial. He was walking to the hotel immediately following the podium ceremony and he gave his bouquet of flowers to my wife. Nobody had any idea who he was except us. Pretty funny.

About 15 minutes before I had my brief meeting with Lance, I talked to Andy Hampsten while he was waiting for the elevator. He was a class act and signed a Graham Watson photo of his L\'Alpe d\'Huez stage win. Just prior to that I met Steve Bauer and as the stage was finishing earlier I met Phil Anderson who was there in some PR capacity (maybe for Motorola??). That was quite a fun weekend to be a cycling fan.

peter...fast forward a half a dozen years and you wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the dude...'security entourage'...
...but, hey, now that he's a civilian, you'll hafta find the lance at some event and get him to sign a different page and then play 'show & tell"...

...when i was a kid, i had literally every top formula 1 & sports car racing driver's autograph...now days, a kid wouldn't stand a chance...and even if they did, it would probably be about what it's 'worth'...
